Albright College Faculty Present Scholarly Research/Share Expertise

Reading, PA (12/20/2022) — Albright College faculty shared their deep expertise and original research with international audiences over the summer months of 2022:

Guillaume deSyon, Ph.D., Lancaster, Pa.

Professor of History

Guillaume de Syon presented a paper, "Constructing French Memories of Flight: The Use of Popular Media in the Establishment of the Pilot Image," at the Royal Air Force Museum conference on Meaning, Memory and the (Mis-) Remembered Past (Summer 2022). De Syon also presented a paper on violent imagery in the French press at the Violences et Medias Conference in Paris, France.

Christian Hamann, Ph.D., Reading, Pa.

Professor of Chemistry

Chris Hamann served as division chair for Chemical Education at the 2022 Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society (June 2022). He also presented a talk on "Curating your project portfolio to support both your professional goals and your students' aspirations." Hamann also presented a poster "Popping the lid off: Rare Bicyclic Sesquiterpene may emerge from a tricyclic intermediate" at the American Chemical Society National Meeting (Summer 2022).

Midori Hartman, Ph.D., Newark, Pa.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Religious Studies

Midori Hartman served as a panelist on the Bible and Women series review panel that was organized by the Committee on the Status of Women in the Profession, during a meeting of the International Society of Biblical Literature (Summer 2022).

Adam Hersperger, Ph.D., Pottstown, Pa.

Associate Professor of Biology

Adam Hersperger and his research student, Megan Keller '23, presented "Comparing the effects of the epidermal growth factor orthologs of ectromelia virus and vaccinia virus following infection of cells in vitro" during the Poxvirus workshop at the annual meeting of the American Society for Virology at the University of Wisconsin at Madison (Summer 2022).

Karen Jogan, Ph.D., Wyomissing, Pa.

Professor of Spanish

Karen Jogan virtually presented a keynote on "The Road Ahead: Maps and End Points for EFL Performance" at an annual conference hosted by Universidad Santo Tomas in Bogota Colombia (Summer 2022). In addition, she presented "Using Clear Plastic Wrap: Making Test Preparation and Assessment Transparent" for the Costa Rica TESOL affiliate in San Jose and was the invited speaker for the closing plenary for Peru TESOL Association. Her speech, "Maximizing Assessment for Proficiency" was selected as the "Best of Affiliate" presentation and was invited to be repeated at the 2023 International TESOL Convention to be held next spring in Portland Oregon.

Elizabeth Kiester, Ph.D., Reading, Pa.

Associate Professor of Sociology

In summer 2022, Beth Kiester co-authored a journal article "Adaptation Outcomes in Climate Vulnerable Locations: Understanding How Short-term Climate Actions Exacerbated Existing Gender Inequalities in Coastal Bangladesh," and a book chapter, "Derailed by the Mommy Track: Organizational Policies. Institutional Expectations and Emotional Labor on Mothers."

Mark Lomanno, Ph.D., Reading, Pa.

Assistant Professor of Music

Mark Lomanno presented a paper, "Mother Tongues: Making Kin in the Words and Worlds of Global Jazz" at the Rhythm Changes conference in Amsterdam. Lomanno also presented a paper, "Intersectional Afrophysics and Fugitive Musical Science" at the Theorizing African American Music Conference at Case Western Reserve University.

Stephen Mech, Ph.D., Reading, Pa.

Professor of Biology

Steve Mech presented a poster at the Annual Meeting for the American Society of Mammalogists, based on research work conducted with student Emily Lenkevich '22 and alumnus Ryan Brett '20 on the impact of periodical cicadas on small mammal populations in Nolde Forest.

Adam Owenz, M.B.A., Wyomissing, Pa.

Instructor of Business

Adam Owenz presented "Utilizing Mastermind Groups to Foster Peer-to- Peer Collaboration, Learning and Engagement" at the Lilly Conference on College and University Teaching and Learning (Summer 2022).

Suzanne Palmer, J.D., Reading, Pa.

Associate Professor of Legal Studies in Business

Suzanne Palmer organized and participated on a panel at the Academy of Legal Studies in Business Annual Conference. The panel addressed different pedagogical approaches to environmental, social and governance at the undergraduate level.

Ian Rhile, Ph.D., Reading, Pa.

Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Ian Rhile presented a poster, "A laboratory experiment demonstrating concepts of Maillard reaction for an undergraduate non-majors food Chemistry course," and a talk, "Using the pedagogy of worked examples in organic chemistry" at the American Chemical Society's fall meeting. In addition, Rhile and his Albright Creative Research Experience student, Gillian Pierce '24, presented a poster, "Using nuclear Overhauser effect experiments to assign 1H NMR spectra in the undergraduate laboratory" at a regional American Chemical Society conference (Summer 2022).

Patricia Turning, Ph.D., Reading, Pa.

Associate Professor of History

Patricia Turning presented a piece of original scholarship at the International Medieval Congress, at the University of Leeds, UK. She was part of a series of panels seeking to expand the historiography of Southern France to a more comparative approach with Mediterranean peers. Her paper, "Forging a Mediterranean Connection to the Jurisdictional Disputes of Late Medieval Toulouse," unpacked the public punishment of a woman found guilty of selling her daughter's virginity and the community's reaction.
