Albright College Professor to Lead Higher Ed Peers in Public Health Discussion
Reading, PA (04/27/2023) — Hilary Aquino, Ph.D., of Lancaster, Pa., assistant professor of public health at Albright College, has been chosen as a lecturer, discussion leader and pedagogical development facilitator for "Disease, Pandemics, and Public Health in the United States," a 2023 National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute at The Ohio State University in June.
The gathering of higher education professors is focused on engaging first generation learners and members of underrepresented groups in the process of learning and building community in relation to critical, embodied histories of health and disease. Participants will experiment with innovative ways of teaching and learning about disease and health in historical context, and learn how to develop pedagogy to build community among students.
Aquino will lead workshops on teaching the history of tuberculosis and segregation and moving beyond Eurocentric approaches in public health history.
An advocate for student learning outside of traditional classes, Aquino has supervised numerous internships, senior theses and independent study projects. Her teaching is grounded in a commitment to challenging students to develop the skills and self-confidence that they need to become critical, independent thinkers. Aquino holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dickinson College as well as a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from Stony Brook University.
