Bekken Earns Landon-Dalton Service Award

Reading, PA (12/19/2022) — Jon Bekken, Ph.D., of Philadelphia, Pa., has been awarded the Landon-Dalton Service Award for his central role in saving the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication's peer-reviewed journal: Teaching Journalism and Mass Communication.

A professor of communications at Albright College, Bekken serves as designer and managing editor for the scholarly journal.

Bekken has been a member of the Albright faculty for nearly 20 years, and teaches a wide range of communications courses, including editing and publication design, freedom of expression/communication law, journalism and democracy, Latin American media, media history, media and the public sphere, multimedia and citizens' communication, political economy of communications, public affairs reporting, research methods, writing for the mass media and related topics.

His areas of research interest include the history of the U.S. labor and immigrant press, the political economy of mass media, and the history of Chicago newspapers and their place in broader media ecologies. Bekken earned his bachelor's degree in communications from the University of California at San Diego, followed by a master's degree in communication studies from the University of Michigan and a doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
